EWI-269 Lightweight Basecoat

Product Overview
EWI-269 Lightweight Basecoat is a highly breathable, vapour-permeable, lime-based basecoat designed to complement both heritage and modern construction. Once cured, it forms a strong, flexible and water-resistant layer while maintaining excellent breathability. Its lime-rich formulation allows it to bond gently to substrates, providing flexibility and crack resistance even on softer backgrounds. A key feature of EWI-269 is its ability to be applied at thicknesses of up to 20 mm in a single pass without compromising vapour permeability, making it particularly suitable for sensitive substrates. Where higher mechanical strength is required for finishing coats, the use of a Premium Basecoat over the Lightweight Basecoat, or a sufficient single-pass thickness, is recommended.
Intended Uses
EWI-269 Lightweight Basecoat is a breathable, heritage-friendly basecoat suitable for both older properties and new build projects. It can be applied internally or externally to a wide range of substrates, including high-performance blockwork, autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), calcium silicate blocks, stonework and solid brick walls. When used on high-performance blockwork, application in two passes is recommended, allowing the first layer to firm up before applying the second. The basecoat can be used with embedded fibreglass mesh or applied on its own, with a minimum thickness of 8–10 mm when acting as a reinforcing layer.

Application Conditions
The basecoat should not be applied in rain or humid conditions, or where wet weather is expected before the material has fully set. Application should take place in temperate weather and must not be carried out in temperatures above 30 °C. Work should be postponed if the substrate or materials are frozen, or where there is a risk of frost within the first 24 hours after application. Typical setting time is between 24 and 48 hours, depending on environmental conditions and humidity. The product should be mixed with approximately 5 litres of clean water per 25 kg bag of dry mix.
