EWI-748 Lime Basecoat

Product Overview

EWI-748 Lime Basecoat is a pre-mixed powdered bonding mortar formulated with natural hydraulic lime (NHL 5), fine natural pozzolans and selected additives to provide excellent adhesion and extended working time. It is designed for use within EWI systems as both a bonding and reinforcement layer, offering strong durability and resistance to salts and acid rain. Its micro-porous structure allows moisture vapour to pass through and evaporate efficiently, supporting breathability, improving thermal performance and contributing to a healthier internal environment compared to conventional cement-based mortars.

Intended Uses

EWI-748 Lime Basecoat is suitable for new build, renovation and bioconstruction projects, for both internal and external masonry works. It is primarily used for fixing and reinforcing insulation boards within EWI systems, as well as for regularising uneven substrates and providing a breathable base layer where rustic or fine textured finishes are required. It can also be used in general masonry applications, such as raising walls and bedding natural stone or tiles.

Application Conditions

The mortar is typically applied at a thickness of 4–10 mm and should be built up in multiple coats where greater thickness is required. When fixing insulation boards, the adhesive must achieve a minimum coverage of 40% of the board surface, with double bonding recommended on particularly flat substrates. Reinforcement coats should be applied at least 24 hours after board adhesion, embedding an alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh into the fresh mortar before applying a final regularising layer. Correct application is essential to ensure the durability and performance of the finished system.
