Wet & Dry Adhesion for Insulation

When discussing construction, adhesion is a topic that can’t be ignored. When it comes to insulation, two main methods of attachment dominate the market: wet adhesion (using adhesives) and dry adhesion (using mechanical fixings). But what are the benefits of having both options at one’s disposal, rather than relying on just one? Let’s dive deep into the strengths and benefits of these two methodologies.

Insulation Adhesive (Wet Adhesion)

Insulation adhesive, a cornerstone of wet adhesion, is a specially formulated compound designed to bond insulation materials to various surfaces. These adhesives can be crafted from a myriad of materials, including but not limited to, polyurethane, acrylics, and epoxies. The fluid nature of these adhesives allows for a smooth application, filling in minor gaps or imperfections in surfaces, and creating a strong, seamless bond once cured. This method requires the adhesive to be spread either on the insulation material or on the surface and then pressed together until the adhesive sets and cures. The methods include either full coverage or the dot and dab method. Either way, the coverage needs to be at least 40% of the total surface.

Mechanical Fixings (Dry Adhesion)

On the other side of the spectrum lies mechanical fixings, the champions of dry adhesion. These are physical devices, such as screws, nails, anchors, or clips, specifically designed to secure the insulation in place without the need for any liquid or paste-like compounds. The precision of mechanical fixings allows for pinpoint accuracy and can be particularly beneficial in high-stress environments where the sheer strength of a physical attachment is paramount. The process involves puncturing the insulation (and often the substrate) with the fixing to ensure a tight, unyielding hold. Mechanical fixings are manufactured from either plastic or metal. Metal fixings act as firebreaks which reinforce the fire resistance of insulation systems, like Mineral Wool ones. Fixings also ensure that the thermal envelope is not compromised, therefore eliminating cold bridging.

Benefits of using adhesive

One of the most pronounced advantages of wet adhesives is their ability to cater to uneven surfaces. Construction projects, whether they’re renovations or new builds, often present surfaces that aren’t perfectly flat or uniform. Wet adhesives, given their fluid nature, can effectively fill gaps and imperfections, ensuring a strong bond even on irregular surfaces. This not only guarantees a secure attachment of the insulation board but also reduces the potential for thermal bridges, maximizing the insulation’s effectiveness.

Durability and resistance are other hallmark traits of wet adhesives. When applied correctly, these adhesives provide a seamless bond that offers superior resistance against environmental challenges like wind and water. This consistent coverage across the board means fewer vulnerabilities like air pockets or gaps. This ensures the insulation remains steadfast and performs optimally over time. Moreover, as these adhesives are designed specifically for insulation purposes, many are resistant to temperature fluctuations, ensuring the bond remains unaffected regardless of the climatic conditions.

Ease of application is another noteworthy benefit. Contrary to some misconceptions, using wet adhesives can simplify the installation process. They can be spread quickly and evenly across large surfaces, reducing labour-intensive steps. This expedited process not only shortens installation time but also can lead to cost savings in labour.

Lastly, from an environmental perspective, many modern insulation adhesives have been formulated with sustainability in mind. With growing awareness of environmental concerns, manufacturers have developed products with low or even zero VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). This ensures that while these adhesives offer robust performance, they do so without compromising indoor air quality or contributing negatively to the environment.

Benefits of using mechanical fixings

First and foremost, dry adhesives shine in their ability to provide rapid setting times. In fast-paced construction environments where time is a critical factor, dry adhesives expedite the installation process. Once applied, they require little to no waiting period, allowing other construction activities to proceed without delay. This immediacy not only speeds up project timelines but can also translate into tangible cost savings by reducing prolonged labour hours.

Furthermore, dry adhesives are particularly adept at providing a reliable bond in areas prone to moisture or humidity. Wet environments can compromise the efficacy of many traditional adhesives, but dry adhesives, given their unique composition and application method, are impervious to such challenges. This ensures that insulation boards remain securely affixed, even in less-than-ideal conditions, ensuring consistent thermal performance.

One of the standout advantages of dry adhesives lies in their adaptability. Should there be a need for adjustments, repositioning, or even complete removal of insulation boards, dry adhesives offer a degree of flexibility that’s hard to match. This adaptability can be invaluable in dynamic construction scenarios where changes are frequent or unforeseen challenges arise.

From an environmental standpoint, dry adhesives have a distinct edge. They don’t introduce liquid or chemical compounds to the construction environment. This means there’s no risk of chemical seepage, VOC emissions, or other potential environmental concerns that might arise with some wet adhesives. Their eco-friendly nature aligns well with the increasing global push towards sustainable and green construction practices.
